Why nix projects which we need?

Dear Editor,

The recent Budget debate in Parliament was heated, controversial, at times even confusing. Certainly, it was no walk in the park. It would be safe to say that most of Guyana looked at the debate on TV or read it in the print media. Wide interest was definitely there.

The administration was called upon to explain its programmes, and explain it did. It is my view that the debate offered the administration the opportunity to reach out to the public in more ways than one. Guyanese were told what the Budget contains and it is now for the people to judge performance against plan.

Many thought that, with the quantum of explanations given, the opposition would have been inclined to pass the Budget and use the various mechanisms in place to monitor how the nation’s monies were being spent and to bring irregularities to book.

Sadly, however, the development of our dear nation seems to be given low priority against sentiments and egos. When Guyana lags behind in development, we become the laughing stock of our neighbours and further afield.  Don’t we need a better airport? Don’t we need a state-of-the-art hospital? Don’t we need a more reliable power supply?

Then, why nix these projects?

Yours faithfully,
T Jadunauth
