Hindi songs of possible interest to Guyanese

Dear Editor,

Having lived in India for the past few years, I casually observed some Hindi songs that caught my attention and which might also be of interest to Guyanese.

‘Chalao Na Naino Se,’ from the movie Bol Bachchan, found on Youtube at

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-2ObrQ2Ct0  is a very happy song, and has a chutney tinge to it.  The video version is fun, simple and colourful!

‘Tum Jo Aaye,’ from the movie, Once Upon a time in Mumbai, sung by the incredible Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, is found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KfCdIr-E1Bs

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s voice is mesmerizing.  Though he is Pakistani, Indians have loved virtually all of his music, with his sufi style singing coupled with his stupendous voice control. His vocal versatility also comes out vividly in another of my favourites, ‘Dagabaaz Re,’ in the movie  Dabangg 2, found at  http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=3m2-HuJKO3k   In this song, the sitar and the harmonium both have incredible prominence.

Finally, I was shocked to have heard a chutney song being played in the gym I frequented in India.  It was ‘I am the Hunter,’ sung by Trinidadian Videsh Sookhoo, and played in the popular movie, Gangs Of Wasseypur, found at  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5 PEr7ceqPE

Happy Arrival Day to all; celebrate and enjoy!

Yours faithfully,
Devanand Bhagwan
