Dear Editor,
It is commendable that the various garbage disposal services are helping to keep Guyana clean on payment of a fee by the residents, but their services are not up to standard and I am appealing to the relevant authorities to address the following problems.
It seems as if the owners believe that emptying the residents’ garbage bins is their only concern, and they have no intention of giving back to the community, neither do they care about the discomfort they leave the residents in after collecting the garbage. I don’t know about other countries, but some of the garbage trucks in Guyana leak smelly water that could be dangerous to someone’s health, and whilst they are collecting garbage the truck would stop for a while and this causes a lot of water to drain out from the truck and then the smell would be there for a long while, leaving it for animals to sniff and lick up, afterwards venturing into yards to play with children and their parents which is not hygenic. Editor, I am quite sure if pressured the garbage trucks will have to be properly maintained and all the holes would be blocked to prevent this nastiness.
Another issue is that in lots of villages, small dumpsites could be found, and I don’t think that it would take much out of them to clear the dumpsite or provide a truck to assist the residents in clearing the area. Once it is cleared, I am quite sure that residents from around will try to maintain that cleanliness because no one likes the sight.
Finally, Editor, after given the contract of providing receptacles and collecting garbage from different villages, Puran Bros disposal services charged one hundred and sixty dollars which has increased to three hundred and sixty dollars today, and I am wondering if that was part of the agreement they made with the government when they applied for the contract. Apart from that, when the truck is traversing the village, the people working on the truck could be seen creating lots of noise and jumping on all corners of the truck and clinging on making it look as if it’s fun. What is annoying is that whenever they pass the Zeelugt Primary School their actions entertain the schoolchildren, and it is an invitation for them to try it which could result in an accident. I am again appealing to the relevant authorities to address the problems.
