The old system on the T&HD ferry at Bartica cannot work

Dear Editor,

I write this letter on behalf of all the owners of motor vehicles using the T&HD service between Bartica and Parika

The old system of throwing boards cannot work.  With the new heavy duty trucks and new model vehicles these planks cannot bear the weight; the vehicles slip. On Thursday, 4th July 2013 at Bartica Stelling aTM Bedford truck was boarding the vessel. The board and planks shifted into the ferry vessel and the TM truck dropped between the vessel Makouria and the T&HD wharf or gangway.

The truck wheels were overboard and it took two more trucks with a winch four hours to pull the TM truck back onto the gangway.  The truck suffered damage to its cab and bumper; its driveshaft and power box may be no more.

T&HD should install the iron stage doors that the vessel came with.

Extend its block and tackle to open and close on the starboard side of the vessel. Take the pattern from the Mekdeci pontoon crossing, and all the problems at the Bartica end will be solved.

And the travelling vehicle owners will feel safer when embarking and disembarking from the Makouria.  T&HD should take the travelling public’s advice. Trucks should ease up on using the Linden-Sherima crossing; the Bartica-Parika route is much more economical and is safer for miners and businesses in Region 7.

Yours faithfully,
Winston B Miller Sr
