Cummins, Nurse bowl Barbados to first innings advantage

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados,  CMC – Rookie pacer Miguel Cummins and off-spinner Ashley Nurse shared eight wickets, spurring Barbados to first innings points over Guyana in the Regional Four-Day Championship here  yesterday.

Cummins grabbed four for 42 from 13 overs and Nurse captured four for 74 from 18 overs, as the Guyanese were bowled out for 225 about 15 minutes past the scheduled close on the second day of their second round match at Kensington Oval, conceding a first innings lead of 142.

The Barbadians were nought without loss from one over in their second innings when stumps were drawn on another compelling day’s play.

Several of the visitors’ batsmen got starts, but failed to carry on – Leon Johnson hit the top score of 46 for the visitors, Derwin Christian made 37, Veerasammy Permaul got 34, Ronsford Beaton was not out on 30 and Christopher Barnwell added 23.

This unfolded after Guyana’s spinners fought back to equally share the last six Barbados wickets, as the home team were bowled out for 367 in their first innings about 25 minutes before lunch.

Barbados captain Kirk Edwards led the way with 120, Shane Dowrich scored 39, Roston Chase gathered 28 and Christopher Jordan chipped in with 23.
Left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul, the Guyanese captain, was the visitors’ most successful bowler with three for 82 from 25 overs, off-spinner Steven Jacobs ended with two for 61 from 20 overs and leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo finished with two for 84 from 23.2 overs.

Jordan put Guyana on the back-foot early, when he had Tagenarine Chanderpaul, son of veteran West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, caught at gully for five in his third over.

Cummins tightened Barbados’ grip, when Rajendra Chandrika was caught behind for 11, and the Guyanese stumbled to 41 for three, when Steven Jacobs was caught at gully off Cummins for a duck.

The first signs of resistance from Guyana came from Leon Johnson. He stroked the ball effortlessly, playing strokes on either side of the wicket, before he was bowled, chopping a delivery from Nurse into his stumps. He struck four fours and two sixes from 71 balls in 108 minutes.

This opened the floodgates and the Guyanese were soon wobbling on 124 for six, after Assad Fudadin was lbw to Nurse for 14 and Christopher Barnwell was caught behind off the same bowler for 23.

Permaul came to the crease and batted with typical freedom, putting on 45 for the seventh wicket with Christian before he edged Chase to Jordan at slip, where Devendra Bishoo edged Nurse to give the same fielder a second catch, leaving Guyana 170 for eight.

Barbados however, were thwarted in their bid to dismiss the Guyanese under the follow-on total of 218, when Beaton and Christian put on 45 for the ninth wicket.

But Christian was lbw to Cummins three runs shy of the target before Cummins wrapped up the innings, when he had Keon Joseph caught at cover for six.

Earlier, Barbados resumed from their overnight total of 267 for four, but they were unable to run away with proceedings.
Edwards struck 13 fours and two sixes from 195 balls in 314 minutes before he was caught at slip off Permaul, who had made the breakthrough, when he had Roston Chase caught and bowled for 28.

Jordan came to the crease and put on 48 with Dowrich, taking Barbados over the 300-run threshold, but he was caught behind off Jacobs.

None of the other Barbados batsmen suggested permanence, as the hosts lost their last three wickets for three runs in the space of 20 balls.

Guyana are currently third in the standings with six points, after taking first innings points over Leeward Islands in their drawn first round match, and Barbados are tied at the bottom with Combined Campuses & Colleges with no points following a 63-run loss in their opening match against Jamaica.
