Tutorial competes today in Barbados Relay Fair

East Georgetown Inter-School runners-up Tutorial High School of Woolford Avenue departed yesterday afternoon for Barbados to participate in the 10th edition of the annual Barbados Relay Fair.

The event will attract regional and international teams and will be held at Kensington Oval, Fontabelle, St. Michael from 10am today. This will be Tutorial’s second appearance at the Relay Fair.

The Relay Fair is set to be a historic event as the organisers have been forced to move to a new venue for the first time in its 10-year existence.

The venue was changed because of the replacement of the rubber on the synthetic track at the National Stadium in Waterford, St. Michael.

The track distance will be 300 and not 400 metres.

The athletic track at the Waterford, St. Michael facility is expected to be completed at the end of this month or early March.

Team Manager/Coach of the team, Kirk Moses told Stabroek Sport he is expecting better performances from the team since the Fair will be held on a grass track and not synthetic track.

“I think we will be at a better advantage this year at the Relays. The athletes will not be competing on a synthetic track and that is a plus for my athletes,” said Moses.

Moses also indicated that all of his athletes are in good health and are free from injuries.

He disclosed that some 13 athletes will be competing in the 4x150m, 4x300m and medley (200m x 200m x 400m x 800m) events in the Under 17 category.

“We wanted a bigger team this year but could not have because of some financial issues.

“The team was divided into two groups and was training with two of Guyana’s top clubs, Running Brave and Police Progressive Youth Club,” Moses said.

“Their baton passing is intact and their condition and speed as well. All they need to do tomorrow (today) is be focussed and carry the baton around the track,” he stated.

Last year Tutorial returned with one silver medal after competing against international athletes at the 9th edition of the game.

Guyana will only be represented by Tutorial High School this year at the Relay Fair as the University of Guyana, Turkeyen and Christiansburg Wismar Secondary School, Linden will not participate. UG won a total of nine medals last year with Lawanda Whaul winning gold in the discus throw.

Another official Andel Bethune will also accompany the team which is set to return to Guyana on Monday
