Campbell century in vain as Windies women lose

DAMBULLA, Sri Lanka, CMC – Shemaine Campbelle’s maiden One-Day International century proved in vain as Sri Lanka Women beat West Indies Women by four wickets to level their three-match series at 1-1 here  yesterday.

The 20-year-old right-hamder scored 105 but West Indies stumbled to 180 for eight off their 50 overs, after opting to bat first at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium.
Right-arm seamer Sripali Weerakkody (3-19) and left-arm pacer Udeshika Prabodhani (3-35) picked up three wickets apiece.

Sri Lanka then recovered from losing a wicket without a run on the board to reach their target off 45.3 overs, with Deepika Rasangika top scoring with 55 and Dilani Surangika anchoring the innings with an unbeaten 38.

Stafanie Taylor finished with two for 31 with her steady off-spin.
The series decider will be played Tuesday (Monday night, Eastern Caribbean time) at the same venue.
West Indies suffered a shocking start when Prabodhani ripped out the top three batsmen with just seven runs on the board after seven overs.
She bowled June Ogle-Thomas for one with the first ball of the second over, sent back Taylor next ball via the same route before trapping Juliana Nero lbw for one in her next over.

Medium pacer Eshani Kaushalya knocked over Kyshona Knight for one in the seventh over and when fellow seamer Chamani Seneviratna prised out captain Merissa Aguilleira for five at the end of the ninth, West Indies were in turmoil at 23 for five.

However, Campbell came to her side’s aid with perhaps her finest hour, striking eight fours and four sixes in an innings that consumed 138 deliveries.
She put on 45 for the sixth wicket with Deandra Dottin whose 35 required 57 balls and included four fours and a six, before added a further 110 for the seventh wicket with Anisa Mohammed and then Shakera Selman.

Mohammed retired hurt on seven at 102 in the 38th over and Selman then took up the mantle with 12 off 25 balls, in offering Campbelle precious support.
She moved into the 90s with two sixes in the 48th over by Prabodhani before reaching her landmark in the penultimate over of the innings.

Sri Lanka’s run chase started shakily when Chamari Kumarihami fell for a first ball ‘duck’ off the seventh delivery of the innings but Rasangika and opener Chamari Jayangani (26) put on 40 for the second wicket.

Rasangika faced 91 balls and hit six fours while Jayangani knock was run-a-ball and contained five boundaries.
Taylor’s introduction accounted for Jayangani and debutant Nipuni Hansika fell without scoring in the same over, as Sri Lanka stumbled to 40 for three in the ninth over.
But Rasangika added 37 for the fourth wicket with captain Shashikala Siriwardene (20) and then a crucial 60 for the fifth wicket with Surangika, to see Sri Lanka home safely.
