GABA GT/Linden Super League season opener…

Coach of the Georgetown compilation of senior players for this weekend’s contest against Linden Robert Cadogan is confident that the capital city players will be victorious on Saturday night at the Cliff Anderson Sport Hall.

The Georgetown/Linden battle this Saturday night is being used by the new executives of the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) to usher in the GABA Super league which begins this Sunday on the Burnham basketball court. Cadagon said that the Georgetown/Linden rivalry has always been fierce and he expects that trend to continue this weekend.

Cadogan, who is also the national coach even guaranteed a victory for the capital city players stating, “Of course Georgetown is going to win.

Linden may have the advantage because they have had more competitive play their but the Georgetown players have what it takes,”

Georgetown seniors and junior will compete against their Linden counterparts. The players that were selected to the Georgetown senior team are Akeem Kanhai, Stephon Henry, Ryan Gullen, Tyrone Hamid,  and Rodwell Fortune of Ravens,Travis Burnet, Stephan Gillis, and Royston Siland from Pacesetters, Hodayah Stewart(Nets),Shelroy Thomas (Colts), Jason Squires  (Pepsi Sonics) and  Marlon Chesney(Plaisance Guardians).

Of the twelve players selected, only Siland and Gullen are legitimate center/forwards. The rest of the team includes an abundance of players at the guard position. Henry, Fortune, Burnett Stewart and sometimes Thomas all play the point guard position on their teams while Gillis Hamid, Chesney, Kanhai and Squires rotate between the shooting guard and small forward positions.

Cadogan said that in spite of the fact that the Georgetown compilation is a relatively small team in terms of height and size in the low post; the current group of players are fully capable of overcoming their Linden counterparts. Cadogan said that the players chosen not only represent to top prospects available in Georgetown, but the players who were most consistent and discipline in attending practice sessions.

“These players that we chose are the hungry ones, they want it and they are hungry for the win. The team has a lot of talent and potential,” Cadogan said.

Cadogan stated that the team has a mixture of youth and experience including five players who , played at the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Caribbean Basketball Championships in 2011.  Those players were Kanhai, Gullen, Fortune, Gillis and Siland while Cadogan was the head coach of the last CBC championship team.

The GABA Georgetown/ Linden Super League season opener is expected to commence at 17:00hrs at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Saturday night, while the Super League will commence on Sunday on the Burnham Outdoor Basketball Court beginning at 18:00hrs.
