No final word on Pakistan test but signs positive

An ultimatum by the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) for Guyana to sign on for a Pakistan Test match later this year expired last night without final word from the government but the signs were positive that an agreement would be reached.

At a Guyana Cricket Board press conference yesterday,  its secretary Anand Sanasie said he is still awaiting a signed agreement from the government on the availability of the Providence stadium which is intended to be used for the Test.

The GCB secretary also mentioned that the dates requested for the Pakistan tour were available. That confirmation was sent from the stadium manager via email. If the agreement is not signed then the fixtures will be pushed to Jamaica.

The Guyana Government derecognised the GCB 15 months ago and this put it at odds with the WICB which subsequently withdrew international cricket from Guyana. An agreement for the Test venue would amount to an acceptance by the government that the GCB is the legitimate representative of the WICB here.

When asked about his views on the current situation affecting cricket in Guyana, Sanasie said that a single ‘National Cricketing Authority’ should be implemented to govern the sport as is done in most countries instead of multiple cricketing entities which eventually lead to conflict among bodies.
