Santos, Alpha United win

Mayor’s Cup

Santos Football Club and Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United gained contrasting victories over Seawall United and Uitvlugt on Friday at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground to book places in the quarterfinal of the annual Mayor’s Cup tournament.

Santos needled Seawall United one-nil while ‘The Hammer’ pounded out a win without taking the field because the ball weavers from Uitvlugt’s club failed to show up, this giving the city team a walk over.

An 86th minute strike by second string goalkeeper, Dervin Bennet, enabled Santos to earn victory over Seawall United in the frenetic encounter.

With the game knotted nil-all and seemingly headed for extra time, Santos employed an all out attack with even the goalkeeper in the offensive half.

The game plan paid off as Bennet received a pin point pass from a corner and headed it past the Seawall United custodian sending his team into the final eight.

Mayor’s Cup action continues on Tuesday at the GFC ground with two fixtures.
Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United will oppose GFC in the opening game from 6.30pm while Slingerz FC will engage Camptown at 8.30pm in the feature match-up.
