Chanderpaul hundred rescues Derbyshire on opening day

LONDON,  CMC – Veteran West Indies left-hander Shiv Chanderpaul stroked his tenth County Championship hundred and his 67th first class, as Derbyshire dominated the opening day of their contest with Surrey here yesterday.

The 39-year-old was unbeaten on 112 at the close, an innings that formed the foundation of the hosts’ 232 for two at Derby.

Opting to bat first, Derbyshire were in trouble as early as the opening over when Leeward Islands left-hander Chesney Hughes perished off the first ball he faced, bowled by seamer Chris Tremlett

And when opening partner Billy Godleman fell for 17, Derbyshire were stuttering at 29 for two.
However, Chanderpaul combined with captain Wayne Madsen, who was unbeaten on 92, to blunt Surrey’s attack, putting on 203 runs in an unbroken third wicket stand.

Chanderpaul raised his century off just 116 balls and overall, has faced 136 deliveries in 169 minutes at the crease, and has counted 13 fours.

Madsen, meanwhile, has struck ten fours off 157 balls in 3-1/2 hours of batting.

At Hove, Barbados all-rounder Chris Jordan featured with the ball for Sussex but could not prevent the hosts from an eight-run defeat to Warwickshire in the Yorkshire Bank 40.

In a match reduced to 21 overs per side, Warwickshire rallied to 157 for seven, with Jordan claiming three for 27 from his five overs.

In reply, Sussex came up short with Jordan finishing on four not out.
