Narine soars to number one

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, CMC- West Indies offspinner Sunil Narine has shot to number one for the first time in his short career, according to the latest ICC ODI bowling rankings.

Pakistani Saeed Ajmal  was knocked off the top spot after conceding figures of 10-0-71-0 against minnows Ireland recently.

Ajmal dropped from 784 points to 757, which allowed Narine (764) to claim the top spot.

The Trinidadian climbed to the number one spot in just 28 games, after snatching 47 wickets at an average of 21.68 and an economy rate of 3.87 since his debut in December 2011.

Narine has become the first West Indian to top the list in ODIs since Curtley Ambrose in 1997, though medium pacer Ian Bradshaw came close when he rose to second in 2006.

Narine (778) is also the number one bowler in the T20Is, ahead of Ajmal (742).

Further down the ODI bowling list for West Indies are Kemar Roach (20th), Ravi Rampaul (26th) and Darren Sammy (28th) while the top ranked regional batsman are Kieron Pollard (32nd) and Chris Gayle (36th).
