West Demerara win DCB U17 Inter Association tournament

West Demerara lifted the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) Inter-Association Uunder-17 trophy yesterday after winning two matches while their third scheduled for yesterday was rained out.

On Saturday at the Everest Sports Club, they defeated Georgetown by 21 runs.

Batting first, West Demerara reached 148 for 6 with Ronaldo Renee top scoring with 57 while Shamar Graham picked up 4 for 17.

In reply, Georgetown only managed 71 for 8 with Sherfane Rutherford making 42.

Playing on Sunday at the same venue, West Demerara thrashed East Coast by 73 runs.

In a 25-overs-a-side match, West Demerara compiled 135 for 5. Renee was once again among the runs scoring 41 while Mark Hamilton grabbed 3 for 18.

In reply, East Coast reached 62-8 as the overs ran out.

The match between West Demerara and East Bank yesterday at the Everest Cricket Club ground, Camp Road, was abandoned due to heavy downpour overnight and continuous showers during the day.

The other match between East Coast and Georgetown at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary was also abandoned. East Coast and East Bank won a game each. Georgetown defeated East Bank at Everest on Friday, and East Coast defeated East Bank at Police ground on Saturday.

Skipper of the West Dem champs, Travis Persaud yesterday said: “Our coach told us when we go out there to remember that focus comes first and we put that into practice and we played well.”

“My personal focus is to get picked to represent Demerara in the upcoming Inter County competition,” said the McGill Superstar all-rounder.

Meanwhile, the DCB announced their squad for the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Inter-County U-17 competition which commences on June 14.

The team reads: Travis Persaud (captain), Tevin Imlach (vice-captain), Ronaldo Renee, Chetenarine Pooran, Sherfane Rutherford, Clitus Johnson, Devendra Chunilall, Navindra Seeraj, Navendra Persaud, Keshram Keyhodan, Mark Hamilton, Daniel Basdeo, Carlton Jacques, and Shamar Grayham.

The standby players are Samuel McKenzie, Sahadeo Ramkellwan, Nioli Reddy, Steven Mangal, Devroy Williams and Josha Ram.

The Manager is Robert `Pacer’ Adonis and the Coach is Garvin `Tibbsy’ Nedd.
