Powell’s 90 inspires Leewards to win over Guyana

LOUIS D’OR, Tobago, CMC- Opener Ross Powell struck a powerful half century to help set up a 20 run victory for the Leewards over Guyana, their first win as the Regional Under 17 Tournament entered its third round on Thursday.

Powell scored 90 runs with eight fours and a six in his 150 ball knock to steer the Leewards to a competitive score of 212/9, after they had won the toss and elected to bat.

Guyana found the going tough on the chase and a five wicket haul by Alzarri Joseph compounded their problems as they stumbled to 192 for nine in 48.5 overs.

Powell shared in an opening stand of 54 with Kasey Carter who chipped in with 25.

Only three other Leewards’ batsmen got into double figures, none going past 20 runs.

Daniel Lewis took three for 13 and Brandon Prasad two wickets.

In a bottom-of-the-table fixture, 212 proved to be too much for the Guyanese as their top order fell away.

After five overs, the Guyanese were reeling at 24 for three.

Stubborn knocks of 53 by Kemo Paul , 35 by Brandon Prasad  and 36 by Keanu Harry gave Guyana a fighting chance, but  the bowling of  Joseph was decisive in derailing the chase.

Joseph finished with five wickets for 40 runs as the Leewards picked up extra bowling points.
