James begins the defence of his 400m title, a day after the 14th IAAF World Athletics Championships start today

“World Champs came at the right time, so my aim is to make everyone home have a fun day of carnival,” he said.

“I will go out there try my best, represent the country well and get on the medal podium.”

James is the World and Olympic Games champion, having won the former in 2011 and latter last year.

In 2011 he won on the line ahead of American top man LaShawn Merritt, who pulled up in the 400m heats during the London Olympic Games.

Merritt, however, handed James his only defeat of 2013, 44.32 to 44.36 in Eugene on June 1, but the Grenadian Sports Ambassador with 43.96 is the lone man under 44 seconds this season.

James has not ruled out anyone and says he is under no pressure.

“At the end of the day it’s competition and any competition comes with a level of anxiety and anxiousness,” he said.

“My main thing is not to get too carried away with the situation because of the end of the day is still 400m … as long as I go out there and represent my country proud and get a good performance, I am fine with that.”

James’ coach Harvey Glance said his athlete will be ready for the event.

“The most important thing is that he’s healthy and anxious to represent his country – he’s rearing to go,” said Glance.
