Alpha United crowned GFA Players Cup champs

Alpha `The Hammer’ United were crowned the inaugural Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Players Cup champions crushing Santos 5-0 through an Anthony Abrams helmet trick at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, Bourda on Friday.

Abrams netted in the 30th, 36th, 38th and 60th minutes while Marvin Joseph completed the hiding with an 88th minute effort.

Held at bay in the opening 29 minutes through spirited defending by the Santos unit, the ‘Hammer’ would take the lead through an Abrams penalty kick conversion.

Awarded the spot kick following an infraction in the area, Abrams would place his right footed effort out of the reach of the Santos custodian to the lower left hand corner of the net.

Abrams would double his tally six minutes later, powering his header from just outside the left upright into the left side of the woodwork after rising to meet a right sided Gregory Richardson cross.

Simply outclassed by the superior frontline of the Alpha side, Santos would go further behind the eight ball as Abrams completed his hat trick two minutes later in a fortuitous fashion.

Attacking the centre of the 18-yard area, Abrams would force a defensive error from the Santos centre half pairing, pouncing on the loose ball to tap home easily down the middle of the goal.

The attacking pressure of the ‘Hammer’ would not relent in the second half as Abrams bagged his brace 15 minutes upon the resumption.

Lurking inside the centre of the penalty box, the dapper ‘number nine’ would bury his right footed strike to the bottom left hand corner of the net after latching onto a rebounded Richardson effort that struck the right upright.

A handled ball in the Alpha box in the 83rd minute would provide the opportunity for Santos to pull one back. Selecting power over placement, midfielder Odel Williams would have his right footed effort denied by the crossbar as the misery continued for the Santos unit.

The lopsided encounter would be sealed two minutes before the end of normal time as Joseph powered home his flat right footed drive from inside the right of the box to the left hand side after evading his marker with a bit of nimble footwork.

For their efforts Alpha will walk away with the first place trophy and $1,000,000 while Santos pocketed the second place winnings of a trophy and $500,000.

In the earlier third placed fixture, Camptown FC edged Riddim Squad FC 4-1 on penalty kicks following a nil-all score line at the end of regulation and extra time.

Camptown will now receive $300,000 and the third place trophy while Riddim Squad will collect $200,000 and the fourth place accolade.
