Rahim breaks records en route to earning best lifter award at the Senior National Championships

Vijai Rahim continues his record breaking tear and is showing no signs of slowing down.

Yesterday when the Guyana Amateur Power lifting Federation (GAPF) staged its annual Senior National Championships at the National Gymnasium, the 66kg junior power lifter smashed his Caribbean and national dead lift and squat records and walked away with the best lifter trophy of the championships for the second year in succession.

The 21-year-old Berbician from the Hardcore Gym squatted 260kg and dead lifted 267.5kg to erase his old records which stood at 250kg for each lift.

Rahim also bench pressed 137.5kg to move his total to 665kg.

His wilks points which amounted to 553 were enough to earn him the best lifter award over 105kg male open champion, Karel Mars who recorded 519 on the wilks chart.

World Masters 74kg dead lift record holder, Winston ‘Little Master’ Stoby was also in a record breaking mindset as he dead lifted 280kg, unofficially breaking his own world record which was recorded at 275kg.

His total which was 683kg was also enough to win the 74kg male open category ahead of Paul Adams.

Kimberly Mars Loncke (84+kg) of Buddy’s Gym was adjudged the best female lifter of the championships after recording 385.065 wilks points.

Other category winners were Steffie DeNobrega (52kg female open), Leon Rupertie (59kg male open), Chitra Ramlochan (72kg female open), Anis Ade Thomas (83kg male open), Marino Jeffrey (93kg male open)  Karel Mars (105kg male open), Farouk Abdool (120kg male open) and Rowndell Clementson (120+kg male open).

The Best Gym award went to the Kingsrow Barbell Gym which had a total of 47 points.

Thirty-six lifters competed at the championships which is the platform from which the GAPF selects teams best suited to represent Guyana internationally.

The event’s major sponsor was Fitness Express.
