Canadian athletes arrive in St Kitts for training

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, CMC- Thirty athletes from Canada have arrived in St Kitts to train as part of their preparation for the start of the Indoor athletics season next month

The Government in Basseterre has officially welcomed the athletes and support staff who normally visit the island in an effort to remain in top shape during the winter period.

The Silver Jubilee Athletic Stadium has been set aside for the training.

“We intend to increase this over the next couple of years,” said Sports Minister Glenn Phillip.

“We have had other countries who want to use St. Kitts and Nevis and the Jubilee stadium as their track and field destination – the track away from their home.”

Phillip says the annual visit by Canadian athletes is in keeping with Government’s sports tourism strategy.

“One of the benefits we are having [is that] a couple of our athletes here from St. Kitts and Nevis are able to train alongside the Canadian team and in some respects some might be going back with the team to train”.

The Canadian team leaves the Federation on December 19.
