Round of 16 set for Guinness street football

-Bent St upsets Alexander Village but fails to qualify

Bent Street upset the highly favoured Alexander Village 2-1 on Monday but failed to qualify for the round of 16 in the Guinness Greatest of the Streets Georgetown Zone which is set to get cracking tomorrow.

Needing to win by two goals or more at the Demerara Park tarmac, Industrial Site to secure their place in the knockout stages, Bent Street would snatch the early lead in the second minute through a Sheldon Profit strike.

Initiating a counterattack just behind the halfway line on the right side, Profit upon collecting a Desmond Cotton left-sided pass, would finish his effort down the middle of the goal from just outside the right post.

Alexander Village should have equalized in the 11th minute through Shem Porter, only for the left footed-winger to miss an open net to the left of the goal from just outside the right post, after collecting a left- sided pass.

Porter would make amends for his earlier miss as he found the back of the net in the 16th minute, poking home his effort from just outside the right side of the goal following an initial goal mouth scramble.

However, Bent Street would retake the lead two minutes later with  Profit bagging his brace with a strike down to the bottom of the net following a two-on-one situation.

Needing to register another goal to secure their place in the next round, Bent Street would be eliminated as Alexander Village held on to secure their passage to the round of 16.

Hope Street Tiger Bay dismantled Kingston by a 3-0 score line. Rensford Coleridge netted the opener in the eighth minute for Hope Street with an easy finish down the middle of the goal after collecting a right-sided pass.

Dwayne Dickson would double his side’s lead in an emphatic fashion with a powerful strike in the 13th minute. Cutting across the centre of the field, Dickson would let loose a powerful right-footed strike that nestled in the left-hand corner of the goal.

The win would be sealed in the 17th minute of the second period as Dwayne Caledenia netted with a simple slot home from just in front the left post after collecting a right-sided pass from Coleridge.

In other results, defending champions Leopold Street registered their only victory of the event as they edged Broad Street-B 6-5 on sudden death kicks from the halfway line following a 1-1 score line at the end of normal time.

Unable to qualify for the knockout stages prior to the commencement of the fixture, Leopold Street took the lead in the 22nd minute through a Mark Hart strike. Broad Street would equalise in the 24th minute as Jamal Cozier etched his name on the scorer’s sheet.

Requiring penalty kicks to decide the outcome, a 4-4 score line would materialise as both sides were efficient with their allocated kicks from the initial spot.Forced to utilize sudden death kicks from the halfway line to find a winner, a 5-5 score line would result as both sides found the back of the net from the new mark.

Required to kick from the halfway line until a winner was found, Leopold Street emerged victorious as they found the back of the net after both sides missed a few attempts.

Globe Yard edged Tucville 3-2 on penalty kicks after normal time ended 3-3. Kevin Lewis opened the scoring for Globe Yard in the second minute with a strike down the middle of the goal from the centre of the field after intercepting a pass in the opponent’s defensive third.

Lionel Lali would double his side’s lead two minutes later as he etched his name on the scorer’s sheet with a penalty kick conversion, following an infringement inside the restricted area.

Jahaal Greaves would cut the deficit to one for Tucville in the fifth minute with a finish to the bottom of the net from just outside the right post.

Lali would restore Globe Yard’s two-goal cushion in the 14th minute of the second period with a finish to the bottom of the net after being in a two-on-one situation.

Gordon Henry would cut Globe Yard’s lead once again in the 23rd minute, stabbing home his right-footed effort from just outside the left post into the roof of the net after latching onto a rebounded shot.

The scores would be levelled one minute later as Greaves completed his brace with a cheeky flicked-on shot through the legs of the final defender from outside the right post after collecting a defence splitting left-sided pass from Henry.

Needing penalty kicks to decide the winner, Globe Yard would prove to be clinical from the spot as they buried all three of their allocated spot kicks to seal the win.

Stevedore Housing Scheme defeated North-Last Entrance 2-0 compliments of a quick fire double from Steven Dolphin in the third and fourth minutes.

Picking up the ball from the centre of the field, Dolphin would place his right-footed effort down the middle of the goal to break the deadlock.

He would seal the eventual win one minute later with a sublime finish from the left side of the field. Racing down the left flank at top speed, Dolphin would unleash a powerful first time left-footed strike that rocked the back of the woodwork.

Albouystown-A defeated Norton Street-East via walkover.

Stevedore Housing Scheme defeated North-Last Entrance 2-0 while Berlin Massive crushed Norton Street-West 3-1.  Albouystown-B edged Riverview 2-1.

Following the conclusion of the group stages, the teams that have qualified for the round of sixteen are West Front Road-Gold is Money, North Sophia, California Square, Broad Street-B, Island All-star, North East La Penitence, Albouystown-B, East La Penitence-Sparta Boss, Queen Street Tiger Bay, Castello Housing Scheme, Berlin Massive, Globe Yard, Alexander Village, Hope Street Tiger Bay, Stevedore Housing Scheme and Albouystown A.

Scheduled to commence tomorrow at the National Cultural Centre tarmac on Mandela Avenue and Hadfield Streets, the opening game at 19:00hrs will see Berlin Massive battling Globe Yard while Alexander Village will engage Hope Street Tiger Bay from 19:30hrs.

At 20:00hrs, Queen Street Tiger Bay will lock horns with Castello Housing Scheme whilst Stevedore Housing Scheme will oppose Albouystown-A from 20:30hrs.

California Square will challenge Broad Street-B from 21:00hrs while West Front Road-Gold is Money will face off with North Sophia from 21:30hrs.

In the final two fixtures, Island All-Star will tackle North East La Penitence from 22:00hrs and Albouystown-B will engage East La Penitence-Sparta Boss from 22:30hrs.
