Scintillating football expected today as Alpha United takes on Pele

- Banks Beer Cup…

The Georgetown Football Association (GFA)/Banks Beer Cup round of 16 continues today with a scintillating doubleheader at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) in Bourda.

An old rivalry will be renewed in the feature contest at 20:00hrs when Alpha ‘the Hammer’ United face off with arch rivals Pele FC in what promises to be an entertaining and bruising affair.

Dismantling Grove Hi-Tech 8-0 in their opening encounter, Alpha United will look to their feared foursome of Gregory Richardson, Dwight Peters, Andrew Murray and Sheldon Holder to ensure a quarterfinal’s berth against the transitioning Pele side, when opening whistle sounds.

Uninspiring in their 1-0 win over Linden side Topp XX in their opening matchup, Pele will require a collective showing led by the likes of Shemroy Arthur, Sheik Kamal and Okeene Fraser if progression to the final eight is to be accomplished.

Alpha United coach Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover during a pre-match comment said: “We are just maintaining from what we would have achieved from the start of the season. I am expecting nothing else but a win. We are focussed on the game and not talking. I have never seen a game won by talking.

“They have to turn up to the park and play. It will be 11 versus 11 and while both teams have an equal chance to win, certain factors will determine the outcome and I know exactly the factors. I expect my team who is prepared and playing all season to continue with its good performances and results,” said Dover.

Barry Myers, Pele FC coach during a brief comment said:“Training has been coming along good and we definitely going to get the victory. Hopefully the ground conditions will be favourable but I am looking to come out with the win.”

The opening encounter at 18:00hrs will see Vergenoegen giants Slingerz FC tackling Berbice outfit Monedderlust FC.

A sub-par performance in their opening 3-1 win over Cougars would not have justified their earlier tournament billing and as such am improved showing led by the trio of Devon Millington, Vurlon Mills and Walter Moore is expected, if victory is to be achieved.

Surviving a tense penalty shoot-out to eliminate Tucville giants Fruta Conquerors by a 5-3 margin, the Artley Bailey-led Monedderlust unit will need another disciplined team showing on both ends of the field if another major upset is to be recorded.
