The oriental

20131117peggy20141005palmRhapis excelsa commonly called Lady Palm originated from southern China and Taiwan.   There are approximately 2,500 palm species in the palm family. Lady Palm can grow both indoors and outdoors.

Lady Palm historically dates back to the 16th century when the Chinese propagated this palm tree to be grown indoors for the imperial residences and they were soon followed by the Japanese who grew them for their palaces as potted plants. The popularity spread to Europe and later to America and the Caribbean. In Guyana it is grown mostly outdoors along the fence or as a clump.

The palm is best described as a cross between a Fan Palm and a Bamboo Shoot and offers an oriental flair. Lady Palm grows with multiple thin trunks, topped with fronds like a green umbrella. The fronds above are slightly offset from the lower ones in a cluster. Indoors the fronds are deep green in colour while the tree grows roughly 5-7 feet in height. If planted outdoors it can grow to 12 feet.

It should be planted in regular potting soil and remember to keep it moist. Fertilize with Miracle Gro Plant Food once every two weeks.

Until next week, happy gardening!
