What students say about…The Mashramani programme for schools

Kelly, Christ Church Secondary School
`I think for Mash they should bring back folklore instead of trying to match the other Caribbean islands. They should uphold our culture instead of trying to take others. I’m not sure yet what I’ll be doing for Mash; I might go out with my family.’

Chandra, Christ Church Secondary School
`Think Mashramani is all about culture. Events like this dancing competition should be better instead of what we’re seeing. I don’t know yet what I’ll be doing but I might visit relatives and spend the day with my family.’

Jermaine, Tucville Secondary School
`I like Mashramani because when you go out you enjoy yourself. I usually go the National Park with my older cousin. When we’re there we watch around, walk around then get something to eat then go out again. The floats are beautiful; my favourite ones are Banks and Carib.’

Ezekiel, Tucville Secondary School
`Mashramani is the fun time of the year when you get to go out with your family, see floats, walk around with friends and have a good time. Night time I go to parties with my cousin. The children dancing today was fun and watching everyone come together was good.’

Joshua, Queenstown Secondary School
“Mash is all about the vibes: you can go out, dress up and have fun. It’s a Guyanese culture. I usually go out with my friends and family. This event [dancing competition] was great; I came here for the great dances. I wished I could’ve performed. My favourite part of Mashramani are the costumes. I’m definitely going on the road this year.’

Shavanna, Freeburg Secondary School
`Mashramani is good culture. Everyone enjoys it every year. You enjoy when people are dancing in the road and masquerading. I usually go out with my family. I dance a lot when I see the band them and hear them playing music. Today was so, so amazing. I didn’t take part but I just watched today.’

Lecresha, Freeburg Secondary School
`Mash is a very exciting holiday and everyone likes it because every year you gotta wear different clothes. Digicel is the best for the floats and this year I’m thinking about mashing with Digicel and enjoying myself. Children have to enjoy themselves the most because when we get back to school we have to write a composition on how we spent the Mash day.’

Tiffany, Tutorial High School
`My favourite part about Mashramani is the floats. I basically go out with my family to the park and relax and watch the floats. Later in the afternoon we go to the sea wall and sun out. I didn’t get to see the performances today because I was so busy helping out with the dances but I think the events are really good and educational. When I saw how some of the students performed I was impressed; it was really entertaining.’

Quienella Freeburg Secondary School
