Freed murder accused gunned down in T&T

(Trinidad Express) A CUNUPIA man who police said was freed of a murder charge two years ago and had history of drug offences was gunned down near his home yesterday.

Barry Maloney, 35, whose addresses were given as Madras Road and Kernaham Trace, Cunupia, was shot dead at around 10.25 a.m.

Police were told Maloney was at a fruit and vegetable stall at the corner of Paul Augustus Road and Chin Chin Road when a gunman approached and fired several shots.

Maloney was shot in his jaw and chest, and died at the scene.

Several witnesses to the killing were unable to provide police with a description of the suspect.

However, investigators said a 24-year-old Cunupia man was detained.

Maloney, was well known to the police and had been convicted several times for possession of marijuana and resisting arrest, officers said. He had been charged with murder, but discharged of the offence in the Chaguanas Magistrates’ Court.

District Medical officer Dr Ravi Kawal examined the body and ordered it removed to the Forensic Science Centre in St James for an autopsy on Monday.

Visiting the scene were Sgts Craig and Figaro, Cpl Ramaran and PC Mohammed of the Cunupia CID, and Sgt Maharaj and others of the Homicide Bureau (Southern Division).
