(Trinidad Express) With today marking 67 days since the murder of Senior Counsel Dana Seetahal, her relatives are questioning why no one has been arrested and charged with her death.
Seetahal’s sister Susan Francois, Director of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), noted in a release that the “inordinate delay” in bringing the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice increased the perception that criminals can kill innocent persons with impunity in this country.
“This leading legal luminary willingly gave of her time and talents not only to Trinidad and Tobago but to the entire Caribbean region. The international community as well, UK, USA, Canada, all have recognised her violent and traumatic death as a tragic loss to humanity.
“The leadership role she played in the dispensation of law and justice demands that the authorities act without delay in bringing her murderers to justice.
“It is well known that the chance of a successful conclusion in homicide case diminishes in direct proportion to the passage of crime. Inordinate delay in bringing her murderers to justice denies her contribution to the country, the Caribbean region and internationally,” the release stated.
The release added that the inordinate delay in bringing the perpetrators to justice increases the perception that criminals can kill innocent persons with impunity in this country; that criminals face no legal consequences; and that murder is now a form of entertainment in the country.
“The murder of this Special State Prosecutor brings to the fore, more than ever before, the issues of crime, the detection of crime and indeed the effectiveness of our entire criminal justice system. If her death can be the catalyst for making this nation a safer place for the average person her life’s work would have not have been in vain. Trinidad and Tobago’s leaders and those in law enforcement must ensure that her murderers are brought to justice. This cannot be another cold case!” the release stated.
