T&T invites Jamaica for immigration talks

(Jamaica Gleaner) KINGSTON, Jamaica: Trinidad and Tobago’s National Security Minister Gary Griffith has invited Jamaica’s Foreign Affairs Minister AJ Nicholson to visit Port of Spain for talks on immigration issues between the two countries.

Griffith has also extended the invitation to the Opposition spokesman on foreign affairs and foreign trade, Edmund Bartlett.

Griffith says his invitation is aimed at arriving at an amicable resolution in the best interest of both countries and all their citizens at the earliest possible opportunity.

This week, Bartlett described as hostile, disrespectful and meriting the strongest response from the Jamaican Government, Griffith’s statement regarding the deportation of 13 Jamaicans last month.

Griffith, in a statement supporting the recent actions of immigration officials, had stressed that Jamaicans staying in Trinidad illegally continued to be a burden on the resources of that nation.

He also said there were an estimated 19,000 illegal Jamaicans in Trinidad and Tobago.
