Boy, 16, man charged over BV taxi driver murder

A teenage boy was among two persons yesterday charged over the brutal murder of East Coast resident Raphael Campbell.

In a press release police identified those charged as a 16-year-old resident of Charlestown, Georgetown and Michael Bishop, 21 years, of Albouystown, Georgetown.

They were both charged with murdering Campbell at Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara. They appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrates Court before Magistrate Alex Moore and were remanded to prison until February 14.

The file had earlier been sent to the Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice. Based on what this newspaper was told, it was recommended that the two be charged for murder while the other three persons who had been detained were to be released.

On January 3, Campbell’s bloody, battered body was found at Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara. The Beterverwagting resident remained unidentified until days later when police intercepted a car on the Linden/Soesdyke Highway with five men inside. It was at this point that police made a link between the car and Campbell.

Campbell had rented the car and was using it as a taxi. He picked up five men and when they arrived at their destination there was an argument and Campbell was badly beaten, stabbed and shot in the head.
