Prisoner gets one year jail over escape from court lock-ups

A South Ruimveldt man was sentenced to a one-year prison term after a brief escape from the city magistrates’ courts lock-ups.

Sherwin Trotman, 28, had been a remanded prisoner at the time of the escape, which occurred on September 13, 2013.

According to Prosecutor Michael Grant, Trotman was attending the court in connection with a sexual offence. At that time, the courts’ complex had been located on Middle Street, Georgetown.

As Trotman was being escorted to the lock-ups by a police constable, he released his handcuffs and ran away. An alarm was raised and the escaped prisoner was pursued by a number of police officers and he was eventually recaptured in the Tiger Bay area.

Although Trotman pleaded not guilty, Grant’s evidence led to his conviction and the father of seven was sentenced to one year imprisonment.

Prosecutor Grant revealed that Trotman is also presently committed to stand trial in the High Court.
