Huge contract cleared for airport expansion consultancy

Despite the opposition’s disapproval of the Cheddi Jagan airport extension plan, the government yesterday cleared a $1.2B  consultancy for the project.

The opposition has cut expenditure from the national budget for the US$138M Chinese-funded  project because of unanswered questions about the scale of the undertaking and the quality of the contract.

Work, however, is still continuing and the clearing of the US$5.9M contract for the provision of consultancy services was a further sign of this. The green light for the contract was announced by Presidential Advisor, Gail Teixeira at a press conference at the Office of the President.

Also cleared, was a contract for $691.8M for the rehabilitation of community roads in Regions Four and Six.
