Mash Day chain snatcher jailed for nine months

A welder will be a guest of the state for the next nine months after he admitted to snatching two chains from a woman on Mashramani day. “I sorry your worship,” said Quincy Letlow, 27, of Lot 13 West Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, after he admitted that he snatched two silver chains from Verona Melville on Vlissengen Road on Sunday, February 23.

He had initially denied committing the crime when he was charged yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Police Prosecutor Jomo Nichols told the court that Letlow saw Melville sitting in the rear seat of her car at around 8pm on Sunday.

Letlow walked around to the right side of the car, snatched the two chains and ran away, Nichols said, before adding that two police officers in the area gave chase and quickly apprehended him.

He was subsequently taken to the Kitty Police Station, where the recovered chains were lodged and he was slapped with the simple larceny charge.

Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Edmond subsequently sentenced Letlow to nine months and fined him $50,000 after he changed his plea to guilty.
