Green says Sooba nixed action on Kitty Market

Georgetown Mayor Hamilton Green said Town Clerk Carol Sooba either refused or failed to act on instructions given to advertise for tenders to aid in the rehabilitation or sale of the Kitty Market.

When Stabroek News contacted Sooba on Saturday, she declined to speak.

Last September, Deputy Mayor Patricia Chase-Green noted that the deplorable structure was labelled as a fire hazard by the Fire Service and added that letters were sent to the government and the private sector asking for assistance in the rehabilitation of the structure.

On Saturday, Mayor Green said they had not received any responses to any of the letters. He further stated that Sooba was given instructions to advertise for either a sale or expression of interest in the Kitty Market and she never acknowledged what she was asked to do.

Members of the market action groups last year said the market is in dire need of rehabilitation. When this newspaper visited the historic structure vendors pointed out the fallen windows and pieces of wood dangling from various sections.
