Labourer granted bail on wounding charge

A labourer was yesterday granted bail when he appeared in the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court charged with unlawfully and maliciously wounding another man.

Magistrate Sunil Scarce heard that on February 1 at Henrietta, Essequibo Coast, Joel Nelson, 30, allegedly unlawfully and maliciously wounded Davanand Atkins called ‘Buck Boy’.

Nelson, who pleaded not guilty to the charge, was represented by attorney Valencia Yansen.

Police Prosecutor Khrisnadatt Ramana said that on the day in question, Nelson dealt Atkins several lashes about the body with a piece of wood.                          In her application for reasonable bail, Yansen said that her client is a family man, has a permanent place of abode and will attend his trial since he is not a flight risk.

There were no objections by the prosecutor and Magistrate Scarce granted bail in the sum of $60,000 pending trial.

Nelson will return to court on March 25.
