Deeds Registry consultancy to UG Vice Chancellor raises eyebrows

University of Guyana Vice Chancellor Dr Jacob Opadeyi has secured a US$193,000 consultancy contract for digitization work at the Deeds Registry.

The award of the contract was made on February 17, 2014, according to the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) website.

When Opadeyi’s bidding for the contract had first surfaced last year, the UG Vice-Chancellor had brushed off queries by Stabroek News about the matter.

Observers have said that the Vice-Chancellor with full-time responsibilities to the university and its myriad problems should not be seeking paid work outside of his contract with UG.

The IDB notification of the award said that the consultancy is for the digitization of immovable property records and the establishment of an electronic database with linkage to the sub-registries of the Deeds Registry. The duration of the consultancy is three months. It comes under the Support for Competitiveness Programme.
