Prisoner who escaped from hospital still at large

Almost two weeks after Dexroy Brown escaped from under police guard at the Georgetown Public Hospital, police are yet to locate him even as the policeman who was guarding him has been placed on “open arrest” according to Crime Chief Seelall Persaud. The Crime Chief added that investigations are still ongoing.

Brown called ‘Brown Boy’ of 138 Waterloo Street was shot by police while trying to escape after he and another man, David Bernard, were allegedly nabbed with guns and ammunition during a police search in Sophia.

Bernard, of West Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, pleaded not guilty when charges of illegal possession of a 9mm pistol and a 138 snub-nosed revolver as well as a live round of 9mm ammunition and six live rounds of .38 ammunition were read to him. He was subsequently remanded to prison while a warrant was issued for Brown’s arrest.

An uncle of Brown had told Stabroek News that he wanted to turn himself in but changed his mind. “He called and say how he want to turn himself in… with his lawyer Glen Hanoman but when he was to come, he called me back he say how he changed his mind and that he want Nigel Hughes represent he.

“I am not going to do that because I have two kids to support. We are just encouraging him to turn himself in and put an end to this case,” the man said.

“Out of the blue he does call and say he need food or money and someone does go to his grandmother for it. We have no idea where he is,” he said.

When Stabroek News made contact with his grandmother, she said “we throw away money trying to get him to turn himself in but he is not doing that. When he get shoot he called and I tell he I can’t come there now, the next day we went and see he.

“After he escaped we find out when the police come and wake me up looking for he. We don’t know where he could be,” the woman said.

A hospital source had said that Brown had escaped shortly before 6 am on the day and it was not clear if he was handcuffed at the time. “The police need to ensure that all the prisoners are shackled to their beds when they come to the hospital.

“This guy just walked out of here. I don’t even think he was handcuffed or anything.

“This is a very scary situation because what if he had grabbed the police officer’s gun and started shooting?” the source questioned.

Brown is the third prisoner to have escaped while under police guard at the GPH in recent months.
