Essequibo woman found dead in trench

The police at Anna Regina are conducting investigations into the alleged drowning of a Sparta, Essequibo Coast woman, whose body was found early yesterday morning in a trench.

According to reports, the body of 51-year-old Banumanattie Ramcharran was found floating in a trench that runs alongside the Essequibo Coast Public Road at Reliance.

Ramcharran, who, according to one source, would often be seen consuming alcohol, usually wandered along the roadways and through various villages along the coast.

The body of the woman was spotted by residents of Reliance and the police were summoned. It is unclear whether the woman died from drowning but police officers have confirmed that no marks of violence were evident on her body.

Efforts made by this publication to contact family members proved futile but Stabroek News was told that Ramcharran was the mother of two grown children.

Her body was taken to the Suddie Mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is expected to be performed.
