Waitress shot dead at bar

A waitress was shot dead at an East Coast bar on Wednesday night and police have arrested two persons and are seeking others.

Police said Jagwandai Ramnauth, 46, who was known as ‘Selena,’ was shot to the head during a dispute with patrons at the Country Club Bar at Chateau Margot, East Coast Demerara (ECD) at about 10:40pm. “…One of the men pulled out a firearm and fatally shot her to the head, after which they escaped,” police said in a press release on the murder yesterday.

Stabroek News learned yesterday that two persons were arrested. Further, Crime Chief Leslie James said the investigators are pursuing other persons who are suspected to have been a part of the crime.

James also stated that a previous “transaction” may have been behind the killing. Sources told Stabroek News that Ramnauth had been preparing to leave her job at the bar. Her boss is believed to be one of the persons currently in police custody along with a female.

The woman, believed to be originally from Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, is said to have migrated to Georgetown many years ago.

Up to the time of her death she was said to be living in an apartment inside of the bar.

Meanwhile, the owner of the building that houses the bar described Ramnauth as a lovable person. “I did not see anything but when the cops came last night.

I was relaxing in the hammock and they told me that the waitress from the bar was shot,” he said.

This publication was also told that Ramnauth was in a relationship with a taxi driver but when a visit was paid to the man’s workplace in an effort to contact him, employees refused to share his contact information on his request.
