Over 13,000 registered for CSEC exams

The Ministry of Education has announced that 13,721 students have been enlisted to sit the 2014 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations and 795 candidates have been registered to sit the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE), both of which started on Monday.

For the CSEC exams, 12,366 candidates are expected to write Mathematics and 11,484 the English, the ministry said in a press release.

The breakdown of the highest number of subject entries are as follows, 20 subjects: 1 candidate; 19 subjects: 2 candidates; 18 subjects: 4 candidates; 17 subjects: 16 candidates: 18 candidates; and 7-8 subjects: 2,500 candidates.

CSEC subjects are examined for certification at the general and technical proficiencies which provide students with the foundation for further studies and entry to the workforce.

Meanwhile, the largest subject entries for candidates enrolled to sit the CAPE are Communication Studies, with 400 entries and Caribbean Studies with 365 entries.

The CAPE is designed to provide certification of the academic, vocational and technical achievement of students in the Caribbean who have completed a minimum of five years of secondary education and wish to further their studies.

Both regional exams are expected to conclude on June 13.
