Gov’t official arrested on sex assault allegations

A government official in Berbice is in police custody pending charges on allegations of sexual assault after two women came forward to make reports against him.

Stabroek News learnt that the man reportedly used his office to commit the offences on separate occasions while the women had gone to seek his assistance.

One of the acts was reportedly committed in March but the woman only reported it after learning that she was not the first it had happened to. The other victim related to her what the man had forced her to do and that she had reported it.

She told investigators that she had asked the man to help her to find a job and he asked her to visit his office.

He made a few phone calls regarding her request before behaving inappropriately. According to reports, the woman was in a state of shock and left the office.

Investigations are continuing.
