Lockups escapees jailed for two years

Murder accused, Randolph Marks and Steve Bacchus were sentenced to two years in jail today after they pleaded guilty to escaping from the holding cell at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Monday.

They appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Murder accused Vickram Persaud, called ‘Lil John’, 28, of Doctor Dam, La Grange, West Bank Demerara, another escapee, was fatally shot during “an armed confrontation” with the police at about 7.20 pm on Monday.

Bacchus, was recaptured in nearby Hadfield Street shortly after fleeing the Avenue of the Republic compound, and Marks was recaptured by the police in a house at Freeman Street, East La Penitence, Georgetown on Tuesday morning.

Persaud, was charged last year with gunning down policeman Michael Cumberbatch at his North Sophia home. Steve Bacchus is also accused of killing a policeman, Quincy Wright.

Marks is one of the two men who were charged last month with the murder of Patsan Trading salesman Bharrat Ramcharan.

The police said that they are continuing their efforts to recapture the remaining escapee, Keron Cummings of Sophia. Cummings is also an armed robbery accused.
