Cops still hunting inmate who fled from Providence station

Police are still looking for the prisoner who managed to escape from the lockups at the Providence Police Station and have since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the breakout.

A senior police official told Stabroek News yesterday that the prisoner remains at large while an accomplice who was recaptured appeared in court charged with escaping lawful custody. That prisoner was sentenced to 12 months in prison. (See other story on page 2.)

Asked if any of the ranks at the station have been placed under close arrest, the police official stressed that an investigation is ongoing.

It remains unclear how the duo managed to get out of the lockups which is supposed to be secure and manned by at least one rank.

Over the years there have been a number of cases where police ranks were charged with allowing prisoners to escape in exchange for money.
