Taxi driver accused of stealing car parts, misusing insurance money

Taxi driver Eon Thompson was yesterday accused in a city court of damaging a car he was given to work and stealing over $50,000 in car parts and misusing $60,000 entrusted to him for an insurance payment.

Thompson denied that during the period of April 4th to April 29th, at George-town, he damaged the car, stole the car parts and fraudulently converted the money to his own use when the charges were read before Magistrate Faith McGusty. He was eventually placed on $125,000 bail.

It is the police’s case that Thompson was given the car to work by its owner, Troy Alstrom. According to Police prosecutor Seon Blackman, the owner of the car allegedly gave the defendant $60,000 to pay his insurance at GTM Insurance Company on April 29th but he never did. Blackman further mentioned that Thompson also stole a 21-inch Pioneer speaker, valued at $30,000, two seat coverings valued at $6,000, a $3,000 spanner, a visor and a jack.

Following investigations, Blackman said the defendant was later arrested and charged. Additionally Blackman stated that Thompson was unable to give account of the missing items and money.

In spite of Blackman’s objections, Thompson was granted $75,000 bail on the fraudulent conversion charge, and $40,000 and $10,000 bail on the simple larceny and damage to property charges, respectively. Blackman’s grounds of objections were the likelihood that Thompson, who is known to Alstrom, may try to interfere with the complainant as well as the likelihood Thompson may flee the jurisdiction.

The case was subsequently adjourned until June 27th.
