Bandits ambush couple in Corentyne home invasion

Gun toting bandits struck on Tuesday night at No. 59 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, where they terrorised and robbed a couple during a home invasion.

The three armed robbers who carried out the attack carted off approximately $160,000 in cash as well as an undisclosed amount of jewellery belonging to Shaline Ramkissoon and Michael Peters, who operate a small grocery.

According to Ramkissoon, of Lot 181 Section A, Number 59 Village, Corentyne, the attack took place after she went into her yard to open the gate for Peters, her spouse, who was returning home at around 9pm. Upon their return into their house, they were greeted by three masked men armed with guns and cutlasses.

Ramkissoon recalled that Peters approached the men and one of the bandits attempted to chop him but was discouraged by one of the others. However, they did fire a gunshot into the air and Ramkissoon sustained minor injuries to her face and her fingers.

The still-shaken woman said that after the shot was fired, she became afraid and cooperated with the bandits, who demanded money. She told them that she had to go upstairs for the money and it was upon doing so that she realised that her attackers had already raided her home and were only seeking more.

With the gunshot alarming neighbours, the bandits made their escaped through the rear of the couple’s yard.

Police arrived after and started investigations.

Peters subsequently took Ramkissoon to the New Amsterdam Hospital for treatment. It is the second time the couple has been robbed. In 2012, bandits entered the home and stole a quantity of cash and jewellery too.
