Asthmatic refused bail on drug possession charges

Brought before a city magistrate’s court on multiple narcotics charges, an unemployed man was yesterday refused bail.

Ramesh Persaud, who claimed he was unemployed because he is asthmatic, was charged with possession were 4.2 grammes of cocaine and 43.2 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking as well as possession of 7.6 grammes of cannabis.

Appearing before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, the Grove Squatting Area resident denied the charges. He did, however, admit to the court that he previously served 24 months in prison for a marijuana charge.

Prosecutor Bharat Mangru objected to bail, which was refused. The case was transferred to the Providence Magistrate’s Court, where it will be called on June 27.
