Bartender accused of embezzlement

Former bartender Leon Abrams yesterday appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry to face charges that he embezzled approximately $30, 000 from his employer.

The 20-year-old was read three separate charges of embezzlement, in which he was purported to have received three separate quantities of cash on July 7 from Sharon Persaud, a customer of the Park View Hotel where Abrams was employed.

In the first charge, the court heard that Abrams allegedly received, on his employer’s behalf, and embezzled $13, 500; in the second charge, $7, 099, out of which he allegedly embezzled $2,597 and a sum of $13,319 out of which he allegedly made use of $9, 999.

Abrams, of lot 3152 Spurwing Drive, South Ruimveldt Park, denied the charges.

After Prosecutor Bharat Mangru declined to object to bail, he was released on $30, 000 bail on all the charges.

The matter was transferred to the Providence Magistrates’ Court for July 14.
