Teenager fined $75,000 for theft of $60,000

A teenager was yesterday fined $75,000 for stealing $60,000 belonging to a shop owner after being arraigned at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

18-year-old Tyson Garnette accepted the July 20 charge which stated that at Covent Garden, East Bank Demerara, he stole $60,000 belonging to Desiree Boston.

When given a chance to speak, the man who said that he was sorry for his actions related to the court that he saw the money, picked it up and carried it away.

He explained further that he took it home where he hid it and that when he subsequently went back to retrieve it from its hiding place it was missing.

The young man resides at the Covent Garden Squatting Area.

The prosecution’s facts are that on the day in question the defendant went into the complainant’s shop where he saw a bag in which the sum mentioned in the charge was placed.

The court then heard that the young man picked up the said bag containing the cash and left for home.

He was later arrested and charged after investigations were carried out.

After hearing the case, Magistrate Fabayo Azore imposed a fine of $75,000 on the defendant and informed him that in default he would be sent to prison for three months.
