Counselling ordered for woman accused of slapping husband over money

A woman who pleaded guilty to assaulting her husband was yesterday ordered to attend counselling with her partner when she appeared before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Donette Rodrigues of 17 North/East La Penitence was charged with unlawfully assaulting her husband Vernon Rodrigues on July 19.

According to Prosecutor Michael Grant, on the day in question the couple had a misunderstanding over money and the woman dealt her husband several slaps. The matter was reported and Donette was charged.

In her explanation, the woman said that she had loaned her husband money but on at least three occasions when she asked for it, he said he had none. Though she had become enraged on one occasion and grabbed him, she said, she did not slap him. “He claim seh I knock him but I just grabbed him by his jersey,” she said.

According to her, her husband eventually repaid her on Monday.

The clothes vendor was released on self-bail by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and was ordered to attend counselling with her husband. The duo will return on August 1.
