Police river patrol finds ganja at Vriesland after men flee

Almost nine kilogrammes (kg) of suspected cannabis was found in Vriesland, West Demerara by police ranks on river patrol in the area yesterday after they pursued two men acting suspiciously, according to the D Division Commander.

Senior Superinten-dent, Ian Amsterdam told Stabroek News that ranks on river patrol in Region Three, in the area of Vriesland, observed two men acing in a suspicious manner and approached them.

He said the men ran away when they saw the ranks and a chase ensued. “They [ranks] found a salt bag with suspected cannabis,” Amsterdam told this newspaper, adding that a jack that was used to compress the suspected illegal drug, was also found next to the salt bag.

According to Amsterdam, the leaves, seeds and stems, suspected to be cannabis, when weighed, amounted to 8.749kg.

Although the men made good their escape, Amsterdam said that the police have gotten leads and are in pursuit of a known drugs person in the Vriesland area.
