Two men were on Tuesday refused bail after they were charged with cocaine possession.
Kishan Singh, 23, of Devonshire Castle, Essequibo Coast, and Suresh Ramjattan, also 23, of Bush Lot, Essequibo Coast were both separately charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court. Singh and Ramjattan, who are both labourers, both pleaded not guilty when they appeared before Magistrate Sunil Scarce.
The court heard that on August 6, Singh, was found with four grammes of what is suspected to be cocaine.
The police said that around 1am on that day, ranks were on patrol duty around the Anna Regina Community Centre Ground road when they saw a parked vehicle. Singh was in the front seat of the car and a search was conducted and the suspected drug was found wrapped in a $20 note. The man was told of the offence, arrested and charged.
Singh was represented by attorney Latchmie Dindyal, who asked the court for bail to be granted. Bail was refused by the magistrate and Singh was remanded into the custody of the state until September 3, when the case is expected to be called again.
Meanwhile, Ramjattan was also remanded to prison on the same offence. It is the case of the prosecution that the man also had four grammes of cocaine in his possession. The court was told that police ranks were on patrol duty on August 6 at 4:25 am when Ramjattan was seen riding along the La Belle Alliance Public Road. He was stopped and searched and the substance suspected to be cocaine was found in one of his pockets.
Ramjattan, who denied the allegations, was also represented by Dindyal, who asked for reasonable bail to be granted. But bail was refused and Ramjattan was remanded to prison until September 2, when his trial is expected to begin.
