Three held over Sophia slaying for ID parades

Three persons held in connection with the murder of Marvin Cumbermack, who was killed on Monday evening during a robbery, will soon be placed on identification parades.

This is according to Crime Chief Leslie James, who confirmed that police investigations led to the apprehension of three persons of interest. The motorcycle, CF 1816, stolen from Cumbermack, is yet to be recovered, James said.

Meanwhile, the dead man’s family remains in the dark on the police’s investigations of the murder. When contacted last night, Claire Carrington, Cumbermack’s mother, told Stabroek News that she was unaware that persons had been taken into custody. She had heard nothing from the police since the night of her son’s murder, she added.

Cumbermack, 29, was killed on Monday night as he made his way to his girlfriend’s Sophia home from work. According to reports, the Guyana Water and Incorporated (GWI) employee was on his motorcycle when he was intercepted by a bandit. He put up a fight and was subsequently shot.

James also shared that there are no leads yet in the shooting of Kwame Smith, 32, of 411 ‘B’ Field, Sophia. Smith was shot in the neck along Eping Avenue, Bel Air, around the same time as Cumbermack, as he also made his way home from work. The motive for the shooting remains unclear but robbery was ruled out after all of Smith’s valuables remained intact following the incident.

He is currently in a critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
