Mentally ill man jailed for breaking glass door at Church’s Chicken

Otis McCurdy, 21, was yesterday sentenced to six months in prison after he admitted that he threw a large brick through a Church’s Chicken glass door due to extreme thirst.

On August 11th, McCurdy was in front of the Linden branch of Church’s Chicken when he picked up a football-sized brick and hurled it through the front door of the business, the police say. McCurdy then proceeded into the store. Though a security guard on duty tried to stop him and asked the man to leave, the defendant refused to and instead sat on the floor, with the glass strewn around him.

McCurdy quietly pleaded guilty to damaging the $170,000 glass door when the charge was read to him. Magistrate Ann McLennan, presiding over the matter, asked McCurdy multiple times why he broke the door. After moments of silence, the man explained that he had been thirsty.

When questioned, the investigating rank informed the magistrate that the defendant was of unsound mind.

McCurdy was subsequently sentenced to half a year imprisonment.
