A walk from Le Resouvenir to the Parade Ground Georgetown to commemorate the martyred ancestors of 1823 is being mounted tomorrow by the Coalition of the 1823 Parade Ground Monument.
According to a release from the organisation, ‘Revolution Walk’ attempts to follow the path some of the ancestors may have taken from the plantations on the East Coast to the Parade Ground, where those who were condemned were hanged.
Some of them were beheaded after being hanged, and their heads were placed on poles near the lighthouse.
The walk is also being held to demonstrate the intention of the African community to build a monument and other fitting structures at the Parade Ground to keep the memory of the martyrs alive.
The release said that the walk will be followed by a rally at the Parade Ground to pay homage to the ancestors of 1823; to heighten awareness among African Guyanese about why it is necessary to build a monument; to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Marcus Garvey’s United Negro Improvement Association – UNIA; to emphasise the need to seek just reparations for the descendants of enslaved Africans here; and to launch a fund-raising drive to erect the monument and monument complex.
The walk will depart from the assembly point at the Guyana Bank of Trade and Industry (GBTI), branch at Le Resouvenir at 6:30am.
